Summary
Amir,a master, and Hassan,a servant are friends,but they don't know they are also brothers that were separated.
When they were kids, they always played together when they were young. Amir would tell stories to Hassan. And Hassan was a nice listener, too. They were best friends, but the relationship between them became strange, since a kite game.
Amir is a kite flyer and Hassan is a kite runner. In the kite game Amir defeats all the kites. Hassan goes to find the kites, but when he goes to find the last kite, it is a blue one. He gets in a fight with a local despot, Assef. Amir sees that, but he doesn't help Hassan. He runs away, because he is cowardly and he also envies Hassan. However he doesn't know Hassan knows he saw the fight and didn't help him, so they become estranged.Not so long after, and Hassan and his father, Ali leave.They go back to their hometwon.
Later, there is a war in kabul, so Amir and his Baba go to the U.S.A. to seek refuge with General Taheri. He is a good man. Baba finds a job to preserve the family livehood. Amir goes to collge in the U.S.He wants to be a writer. Soon after he falls in love with General Taheri's daughter, Soraya. They get married.
However, Baba's health is not good anymore. Bad things happen in threes. Baba dies; Rahim tells four things to Amir: One, he lives in Amir's old house in kabul with Hassan's family; Two, Hassan and his wife are dead; Three, Hassan was Amir's brother. Of the same father,but diffferent mother; And four, Hassan had a son, Soharb, which is his nephew.
Amir goes back to his hometown, Kabul, and it has a different face. A friend in kabul, Farid, helps him to find Soharb, because Soharb is gone. They find find out Soharb has beenbought from Assef. He is an official now. But he is still a crazy guy. He buys kids and sexually abuses them. And he has a deal with Amir. If Amir fights him and wins. Amir can take Soharb back. However Amir isn't good at fighting, but when he is dying, Soharb saves him. Soharb uses his catapult and shoots on Assef in the eye.Amir and Soharb run away. They go to a hospital, because Amir has many hurts.
When Amir is better, he ask soharb to live with him. Amir asks Soraya,too. Soraya is happy to have a son, because she can't have a baby. Soharb aqrees and they revin to the U.S.A. Sometimes Amir will teach Soharb how to fly a kite, because he wants to help Hassan to be a good father. Amir takes care Soharb, his dear nephew, and his dear son. He tells him about Hassan, and flying kites with him,but now,Soharb is a kite flyer and Amir is a kite runner.
My thought
This is the first time I have read a book in English.I chose this book, The Kite Runner, because I read it in Chinese before. It is really nice. So I wanted to read it in English again. However this book was a little difficult to read. There were many words that were very hard, but that helped me learn new vocbvlary.
The author is Khaled Hosseini. He ueses hiss hometown, Kabul to set the story in. This book, The Kite Runner, was his first book. However, the book is not like a firstt book. It is great. The characters are describe are very lively. Like Amir,an envious and timid boy becomes a conscientious and brave man. Futhermore the story are great, too. In part 3 Hassan says “A thousand times over to you.” to Amir. This really made me cry,because this really warm. If a friend says that to you. You might be happy. Although the story isn't ture, but I could follow it as it if were. I really felt like the charters were real and the story was real, too.I enjoyed reading this book very much. Amir and Hassan’s friendship made me feel very warn and fragant inside.
The setting is in Kabul.I think it was a beautiful place before,but it is terrible now. In part 1 the authour tells us about Kabul.It says it is on a hill near Amir's house.Amir and Hassan always go to the hill and look down on Kabul, their home. It has a lot of people and stores, but , Amir's house other side. It is quiet and clear. There are many trees, flowers and a small river. At night,the city becomes quiet. The stores close and people go home eat dinner and sleep. But the other side is different. It has owls and some bugs that make sounds, but the sound is beautiful like a song. However, after the war. A change.Kabul becomes very poor.
I think Amir is really a great man,because he can confront his problems.He is willing to confront the truth.He changes greatly.This is difficult for anyone in the world.If I was Hassan or Baba,I might be very proud to Amir.I think we can learn from mind. Hassan is a good friend.He is honest and reliable. I hope I can find this kind of friend one day in the future.
The ending of this book is not really a happy ending.Hassan is dead. Soharb is an orphan.Althogh Amir will care tor Soharb, I don't think Soharb will be very very happy.Maybe he will happy,but his past is sad and poor. And maybe in school some bad kids will tease him, for being an orphen. So I do not think that Soharb will be very very happy.
I think no story has a happy ending.There will be some problem in the future.And we need to confront them.
What I learned
Hassan's sacrifice and Amir's bravary are to be admired. And their love is we can learn from, too. In sociery now, too many people don't know what strong, which love means. They don't know how to love people or even them selves. I think love is a desirable goal.
However, The Kite Runner has two defects, I think. The first is that vague about the characters personality and appearance. I could't even know what age Amir and Hassan are in the story.
Secondly there are some special jargon, like ”jan” and ”yo” that mean very close friends or family, like”dear” particular words from the conutry.
The Kite Runner is an interesting novel,but Khaled Hosseini also wrote a second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and I think this book is bettter than The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner is still a great book. A Thousand Splendid Suns is about woman in Kabul. It is about their feelings, heartflet and bottled-up pain.It is strongely expresses the women's feelings, and it also made me feel WOW! How terrible! This is not fair! A man can have many wives?! No! No! I will not let this thing happen.Maybe because I am a girl,so I think it is awful. But I think this is more powerful and touched me. The story is sad. I also feltuhar the women in Kabul; poor and humble.This book is better than The Kite Runner,but there isn't so much about family love. A Thousand Splendid Suns is more about the fatalism.It is different from The Kite Runner.
In this book, the most improtant thing we need to learn is about Amir's mind.In society now, most people always escape from problems. They don't want to confront problems. It is one of the our bad habits. I hope we can change this. Even a student,a teacher,a parent-anyone in the world needs to fix this. No one is brave if he or she runs from problems.When you want to solve a problem, you need to confront it. When you confront. You are brave!
In conclution, this book is very sutiable for everyone to read. It has a great story and lively characters. It can make you feel you are one of the characters in the book.
Also, you will understand true friendship. And you can learn an important thing: confronting your problems.
